World’s largest green hydrogen plant goes online, powered by off-grid renewables

The world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia production facility has officially been commissioned in China, powered by an AI-integrated off-grid renewable system, also described as the biggest of its type.
The project has been developed by Chinese green technology company Envision, and is located at the Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park in Southeastern Inner Mongolia, where it is capable of delivering 320,000 tonnes of green ammonia each year.
Envision says the facility is powered by an AI-integrated off-grid renewable system consisting of wind turbines, solar energy, grid-forming battery storage, and so-called predictive meteorological modelling that is capable of dynamically balancing wind and solar input with electrolyser and ammonia synthesis demands.
“This is more than a technological milestone,” said Lei Zhang, Envision’s founder and CEO.
“Scalable, green alternatives are now real and operational. We can’t get to net zero without green hydrogen, and we can’t afford to wait. This is the blueprint for a clean energy future.”
The combination of energy storage and load flexibility allows for surplus green power generated at the site to be converted to liquid nitrogen and then stored within a dynamic air-separation unit.
At the same time, electrolysers are able to respond to swings in renewable power generation to dynamically optimise energy absorption and ammonia production.
Envision also announced that its new production plant is the first green ammonia facility globally to receive the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification for green ammonia with a verified greenhouse gas footprint.
“This milestone demonstrates our world-leading capabilities in lifecycle carbon management and sets a new global benchmark for sustainable green hydrogen and ammonia production,” the company said.
By 2028, Envision predicts the Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park – supposedly the world’s first net-zero industrial park – will be capable of producing 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia each year. The company hopes that the industrial park will serve as a replicable model for clean industrial hubs around the globe.
The Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park is also destined to integrate the supply chains of several green industries, including electric vehicle and battery manufacturing.
Envision expects the industrial park will also be powered by the latest in clean energy technologies, including wind, solar, and hydrogen power technologies, and will be connected to an electric truck transportation system and managed by Envision’s AIoT – a proprietary technology combining artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure.
