Trump offers to pay Total to cancel US leases’

The Trump administration is drafting settlement agreements that would pay TotalEnergies almost $1bn to abandon plans for the Attentive Energy and Carolina Long Bay wind farms off the US east coast, the New York Times has reported.

The leases for the projects would be cancelled under proposed agreements seen by the newspaper.

The move comes after the Trump administration lost in five separate court actions related to the shutdowns of five under-construction wind farms in December.

TotalEnergies submitted a Construction and Operations Plan (COP) to the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in September, 2024 for the 1.5GW Attentive Energy 2 array in the waning months of the Biden administration.

The French oil major has held the lease for Carolina Long Bay since 2023.
