  • Lead grid connection discussions with utilities, manage interconnection applications, and ensure compliance with Japanese grid codes and standards.
  • Assess project specifications, storage needs, and grid requirements to propose optimal BESS configurations and system architectures.
  • Design, configure, and validate electrical systems for BESS, including control panels, protection schemes, and cable schedules for both AC and DC circuits.
  • Evaluate and select BESS components and suppliers, ensuring technical capability, quality, and compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEC, UL, JIS).
  • Perform system modelling, simulations, and technical due diligence to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Develop and implement quality control plans, inspection checklists, and acceptance criteria for BESS installations.
  • Support early-stage project development by investigating site potential and providing technical input on feasibility.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Prepare and present technical documentation, reports, and project updates to stakeholders.
  • Travel domestically for site visits, meetings, and project oversight as required1.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or a related field; a Master’s degree or relevant certifications are advantageous.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of professional experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus on BESS or power plant development.
  • Deep understanding of BESS technologies, electrical system design, grid integration, and Japanese regulatory requirements.
  • Experience negotiating with government agencies, utilities, and EPC contractors.
  • Practical experience in the development, design, quality control, and maintenance of electrical systems for infrastructure or energy projects.
  • Fluent Japanese and business-level English proficiency required.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks in parallel, and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and team collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to travel within Japan as needed.

Preferred Skills and Attributes:

  • Experience in both renewable energy and energy storage project development in Japan.
  • Familiarity with international and Japanese electrical standards (e.g., IEC, UL, JIS).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar design tools.
  • Qualifications such as Chief Electrical Engineer or equivalent are a plus.
  • Action-oriented, flexible thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
