Samsung Heavy Industries has won the approval of an American maritime authority to further develop its new semi-submersible floating wind technology.

The “SnapWind Float” solution features a passive ballast system and optimised mooring lines to provide more stability for 15MW turbines in rough, deep-sea applications.

It was recently awarded approval in principle by the Korean Register, with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) being the latest to greenlight its use offshore.

Hae-Ki Jang, Samsung Heavy Industries’ chief technology officer, said: “The SnapWind Float is a next-generation solution developed by combining our engineering, procurement and construction capabilities with innovative design.

“Moreover, it addresses both technical and commercial challenges faced by offshore wind developers seeking efficient and commercially viable solutions.”

Miguel Hernandez, senior vice president at ABS, added: “Floating offshore wind platforms represent a significant opportunity in renewable offshore energy development in various parts of the world.

“The bureau is actively at the forefront of this sector, bringing global expertise in certifying and verifying new designs.

“We are proud to collaborate with industry leaders like Samsung on innovative solutions that are focused on advancing safety at sea.”
