RWE swaps chiefs at key renewables and generation units

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE’s unit for onshore wind and solar in Europe and Australia, will leave her post at the end of March 2026 to become chief development officer at Vonovia, Europe’s largest real estate company.

She will be succeeded on April 1, 2026, by Sopna Sury, who currently heads the hydrogen business on the RWE Generation executive board.

Nikolaus Valerius, the CEO of RWE Generation, will take over responsibility for the hydrogen business in addition to his existing responsibilities.

“In Sopna Sury, we have an outstanding leader and excellent manager from our own ranks who will lead our onshore wind and PV business in Europe and Australia in the future,” RWE CEO Markus Krebber said.

“She knows RWE and the renewable energy business inside out and will successfully continue our growth strategy.”

Krebber thanked Wünschel and stressed she had successfully driven forward the expansion of renewables at RWE in recent years.

Sury has been a member of the executive board at RWE Generation since February 2021 and has built up the hydrogen business for the German utility.

Before that, she was director for strategy, regulation and integration management at RWE Renewables since autumn 2019. Sury previously held various management positions at German utilities Uniper and E.ON for many years.
