NKT JV opens Taiwan offshore cable factory

A joint venture between NKT and Walsin Lihwa has inaugurated Taiwan’s first offshore power cable factory in Kaohsiung.
The Walsin Energy Cable System facility (pictured) spans 231,000 square metres with a 50-metre extrusion tower and will produce high- and medium-voltage AC offshore power cables for the local offshore wind market, the partners said.
The achievement embodies a shared vision of accelerating the clean energy transition and strengthening critical infrastructure, Claes Westerlind, chief executive of NKT, stated.
At the opening ceremony WECS highlighted the strategic importance of the plant in supporting Taiwan’s long-term renewable energy ambitions.
“We are delighted to collaborate with NKT, whose leading technology and expertise – combined with our shared commitment to environmental, social, and corporate governance principles – have enabled us to successfully complete the construction of our submarine cable factory in record time,” said Walsin Energy Cable System chairman Mr. Yu-Lon Chiao.
“This partnership represents a major milestone in Taiwan’s green energy transition and opens new opportunities for both parties across the Asia-Pacific market,” he added.
Commercial production is scheduled to begin in 2027 following type tests and prequalification.
