About the job
An international renewable energy platform is expanding into Japan and is seeking an Energy Markets Analyst to support its market entry and growth strategy. This is a rare opportunity to be the first energy markets hire in Japan, operating at the intersection of analytics, commercial strategy, and asset development.
You will play a critical role in shaping the route-to-market strategy for large-scale battery storage and other renewable assets in one of Asia’s most complex and rapidly evolving power markets.
Key Responsibilities
Market Analysis and Insights
- Analyse Japan’s electricity markets including JEPX, capacity market, balancing markets, and ancillary services
- Track regulatory developments, grid constraints, curtailment risk, and pricing dynamics
- Translate complex market data into actionable strategic insights
- Develop tools and frameworks to automate market monitoring and reporting
Revenue Modelling and Commercial Support
- Build and maintain revenue models for battery energy storage and renewable assets
- Support development teams with commercial analysis and investment decisions
- Contribute to structuring of offtake agreements including tolling and revenue-sharing models
- Assess merchant risk within Japan’s evolving market framework
Route-to-Market Strategy
- Identify and evaluate aggregators and optimisation partners
- Support negotiation of route-to-market agreements and commercial structures
- Analyse strategic options including outsourcing, co-optimisation, and future in-house capabilities
- Monitor and benchmark performance of commercial partners
Stakeholder Engagement
- Engage with regulators, grid operators, and key market participants
- Maintain a strong understanding of policy and regulatory changes
- Communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Requirements
- Some years of experience in power markets, energy trading, or market analysis
- Strong understanding of the Japanese electricity market, including JEPX and regulatory frameworks
- Experience with Python or similar analytical tools
- Exposure to renewables or energy storage is advantageous
- Fluent in Japanese and English
