Position Summary
The Renewable Energy Legal Counsel provides comprehensive legal support across the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and emerging technologies. This role is responsible for advising on contracts, regulatory compliance, project development, dispute resolution, and risk management. The Legal Counsel works closely with internal stakeholders, external partners, and regulatory bodies to ensure the company’s interests are protected and aligned with industry best practices and evolving legal frameworks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements, including EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction), O&M (Operations & Maintenance), power purchase agreements (PPAs), joint venture agreements, and financing documents.
- Provide legal advice and support throughout the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, covering NDAs, bidding/tendering processes, contract negotiations, and execution phases, including managing claims and disputes.
- Advise on regulatory compliance, permitting, environmental, and sector-specific laws, including anti-bribery, anti-corruption, data privacy, and anti-money laundering regulations.
- Support project development teams on legal risks, project structuring, and mitigation strategies for large-scale infrastructure and energy projects.
- Oversee dispute resolution, including managing litigation, arbitration, and settlements in collaboration with external counsel.
- Support M&A transactions, investments, and other strategic corporate activities as required.
- Maintain and update legal templates, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with current laws and industry standards.
- Provide training and guidance to internal teams on legal and compliance matters, fostering a culture of integrity and regulatory awareness.
- Monitor evolving legal and regulatory changes impacting the renewable energy sector and advise management on implications and required actions.
- Manage and coordinate external counsel and legal budgets for project-related matters.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law; admission to the bar in a relevant jurisdiction.
- Minimum 5–8 years of post-qualification experience, ideally with a focus on renewable energy, infrastructure, or large-scale project development.
- Demonstrated expertise in contract drafting, negotiation, and risk management for EPC, O&M, PPA, and other project-related agreements.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks relevant to the renewable energy sector, including environmental, data privacy, and anti-corruption laws.
- Experience in managing disputes, claims, and litigation in the context of project development and execution.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, and deliver under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in English; additional language skills are an advantage.
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
- Experience working in multinational or cross-jurisdictional environments.
- Familiarity with M&A, project finance, and joint venture transactions in the renewable energy sector.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
- Commercially astute, adaptable, and able to work effectively across diverse teams and cultures.
