Acciona to build 1GWh battery in Chile

Malgarida project to boost renewable integration

Acciona Energia has announced plans to install a 200MW/1GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its 238MWp Malgarida photovoltaic complex in Chile’s Atacama Desert.

The project, expected to come online in early 2027, will be among the largest battery storage installations in Latin America, according to the company.

Acciona Energia said the system will store energy generated during the day and dispatch it at night, allowing cleaner and more flexible operation of the grid while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and associated CO₂ emissions.

The Malgarida battery will deliver 200MW of power for up to five hours and forms part of the company’s strategy to optimise renewable energy management in Chile, where it operates 922MW of installed capacity.

This includes three wind farms — Punta Palmeras (45MW), San Gabriel (183MW), and Tolpan Sur (84MW) — and five photovoltaic plants: El Romero (246MWp), Usya (64MWp), Almeyda (62MWp), and Malgarida (238MWp).

Acciona Energia is also developing a further 1.5GWh of battery storage across three additional projects linked to its Chilean solar assets.

The company said the investment will help match Chile’s abundant daytime solar output with energy demand and strengthen grid stability through the use of large-scale storage technology.
