SunAsia to advance 784-MW Philippine floating PV project with Gunkul

Thailand’s Gunkul Engineering PCL (BKK:GUNKUL) will partner with SunAsia Energy to move forward with the latter’s 784-MWac/923-MWdc Laguna Lake floating solar project in the Philippines.

The partnership was announced by Gunkul on Thursday, along with a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE). The pact signed during a commitment ceremony for the project will facilitate the future power plant’s commissioning, which is targeted in the last quarter of 2027.

The photovoltaic (PV) complex will be made up of seven floating solar arrays and is set to become the largest ones of its kind in the region. According to local media reports, the overall investment required for the construction is estimated at over USD 1 billion (EUR 862.1m).

“Every successful renewable energy project strengthens our energy security. Every investment brings jobs and opportunities to our communities. And every megawatt of clean energy moves us closer to a more resilient future for the Filipino people,” said Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin.

The project will back the Philippines’ goal of lifting renewable energy to at least 35% of the power generation mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040. It is part of SunAsia’s broader Laguna Lake floating solar development, which covers leases for 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) of surface for projects with an overall capacity of 1,300 MW. Before Gunkul’s entry, Macquarie’s Blueleaf Energy provided development and funding support for the project.
