Vertex Search is supporting a leading international renewable energy developer in the appointment of a Grid & Electrical Engineering Manager to join its growing engineering team in Tokyo.
This is a key technical position supporting the development and execution of utility-scale renewable energy projects across Japan. The successful candidate will provide specialist expertise in grid and electrical engineering, supporting projects from early-stage development through construction and commissioning.
The role offers exposure to onshore wind, offshore wind and battery energy storage projects, working closely with internal development, engineering and construction teams as well as utilities, government authorities, EPC contractors and equipment suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical engineering activities across utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Develop and review detailed electrical designs including cable systems, substations and grid connection infrastructure.
- Provide expertise across extra-high voltage (EHV), high voltage (HV), medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) systems.
- Support grid connection studies, utility engagement and regulatory submissions. Review and optimise cable routing, single-line diagrams, layouts and technical drawings using AutoCAD.
- Contribute to SCADA, monitoring and communication system design and integration.
- Support technical due diligence, project evaluation and cost estimation activities.
- Coordinate with utilities, government agencies, EPC contractors and external consultants.
- Conduct site visits, technical inspections and construction reviews.
- Support engineering governance, risk management, safety compliance and quality assurance initiatives.
Requirements
- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience within renewable energy, power generation, transmission or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of grid connection requirements, substations and electrical system design.
- Experience working on EPC projects, ideally within the wind sector.
- Understanding of cable design, electrical construction and commissioning activities.
- Familiarity with SCADA, monitoring and communication systems.
- Experience using AutoCAD for electrical design and drafting.
- Business-level Japanese and English communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder management and coordination capabilities.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting utility-scale onshore wind projects in Japan.
- Exposure to offshore wind and/or battery energy storage projects.
- Previous involvement in grid application and utility approval processes.
