Japanese cable company buys UK tech for offshore wind roll-out

Japanese cable installer SEKIKAIJI Industry has acquired a trencher and advanced cable tracking technology from a UK subsea services firm.

Nottingham-based SMD is providing its high-capacity jet trencher, which features a specialised launch and recovery system designed for adverse sea conditions, as well as the Artemis tracker for cables and pipelines, scheduled for delivery in the spring of 2026.

According to SMD, Artemis employs electromagnetic field technology to identify cables during the construction of wind farms, particularly in scenarios where there are no existing power lines or injected signals and facilitates cable location during the multipass burial process.

Masaru Seki, president of SEKIKAIJI, said: “This is a major milestone for us, strengthening our ability to meet the demands for larger power cables, deeper burial depths and faster project timescales.

“Having operated in Japanese waters for over half a century, we are committed to remaining one of the country’s leading submarine cable burial contractors.

“This means supporting the development of the emerging offshore renewable market, where safe and accurate cable burial is essential.”

Both technologies will be used to advance Japan’s deployment of offshore wind.
