FRV Australia to build New Zealand solar project

FRV Australia has announced plans to develop the 210MWdc Rangitīkei solar project on New Zealand’s North Island.
The project will occupy around 450 hectares in the Rangitīkei district and is expected to generate about 350GWh of electricity annually, enough to power 45,000 homes and avoid 35,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Construction will create up to 250 jobs at its peak and average around 75 workers over two years. The design also includes provision for a future battery energy storage system to improve grid flexibility and resilience.
“With Rangitīkei, we are taking another step forward in our efforts to contribute to a low-emission future for New Zealand,” said Carlo Frigerio, managing director of FRV Australia. “This project aligns with our vision to lead the energy transition in the region, supporting local economic development and contributing to Aotearoa’s green electrification goals.”
The announcement coincides with the completion of FRV Australia’s joint venture with Genesis Energy, which helped the company enter the New Zealand market. FRV Australia acquired Rangitīkei from the joint venture but will continue its partnership with Genesis through their shared ownership of the Lauriston Solar Plant in Canterbury, which began operations in 2024.
“We greatly value our collaboration with Genesis, which has been instrumental in this journey,” Frigerio added. “Now, FRV Australia continues its journey as we explore new renewable development opportunities in the country.”
