Denmark approves 3GW offshore tender

The Danish government has given the green light for a new 3GW offshore wind tender.
The three tenders will open this Autumn covering two areas in the Danish North Sea and one in the waters separating Denmark from Sweden.
Nordsøen Midt and Hesselø are expected to have a bid deadline in the spring of 2026, and Nordsøen Syd is expected to have a bid deadline in the autumn of 2027.
The first two parks will be tendered with an expectation they will come online by a deadline set of 2032. The last park has an establishment deadline of 2033.
It is expected that 150 turbines of 20MW each will be installed. The turbines are expected to have a 150-meter-high tower and a blade diameter of 260 meters with a total height of 280 meters.
The total support for the projects is DKK 27.6bn (€3.7bn) in state support.
A 2-sided capability-based contract for difference model is being offered.
“We need more secure green power and energy to make Denmark and Europe independent of energy from Russia,” Energy Minister Lars Aagaard said in a statement.
“We are taking a big step towards that now. There have been bumps in the road globally in getting offshore wind up in recent years, and that is why we have also agreed that the state will lend a helping hand to the projects if necessary.
“We have chosen locations in both Eastern and Western Denmark, so that the parks benefit the electricity price throughout Denmark, and there will be local jobs and business opportunities on both sides of the Great Belt. The many parties behind the agreement have chosen the path of action and to take responsibility in uncertain times, and I would like to thank them for that.”
The new tender will replace the failed 3GW North Sea auction held last year. It largely failed to attract any bids because of the lack of state subsidies and uncertainty over revenues.
It subsequently led to the cancellation of another 3GW tender intended to be held in April last year.
